Network ID

Every student at UIS is assigned a Network ID (NetID.) The NetID is used to access information technology resources such as email, online courses, and online library databases and journals.

Your NetID is printed on your class schedule. It is formed by combining the first initial of your first name, the first four letters of your last name, two or more digits (to distinguish similar names) and the letter “s”. The initial password for your NetID is set to your birth date in yyyymmdd format.

(ex. For a student named Chris Tarragon whose birthday is Oct. 26, 1977, the NetID could be ctarr01s and the password would be 19771026).

Email

The University email system is Microsoft Exchange. You are assigned a mailbox with 5MB of storage space. Your email address is YourNetID@uis.edu.

(ex. Chris Tarragon’s email address would be ctarr01s@uis.edu)

You can access your email in various ways, by  using a web browser such as Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer. The web address is http://studentmail.uis.edu/exchange.
Use your NetID and password to login.

You can also use Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger, Eudora, or any other POP3 or IMAP email client software to access your campus email. The configuration information you need is:

Incoming mail (POP3, or IMAP) server: studentmail.uis.edu

Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: studentmail.uis.edu

Account name:  YourNetID

For more information on email access go to http://netinfo.uis.edu/student

Your Password

Due to security requirements, passwords must be changed every 180 days.  For more information on password guidelines and instructions on how to change your password, go to http://www.uis.edu/network/password.htm

Global Address Book and Distribution Lists

Your name appears in the UIS Global Address Book as Lastname, Firstname (UIS Student). Your email address is also included in a student email distribution list, which is used for official university communications and announcements.

Library Databases

The Brookens Library subscribes to a number of online databases and electronic journals. Licensing terms for some of these online resources limit access to UIS faculty, staff, and enrolled students. When you try to access these web-based licensed databases from off campus, you will be prompted for a username and password. Use your NetID and password to gain access.

Online Courses
